内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This article argues whether Jocasta was pious to Apollo in the third episode of S. OT.
First, focusing on Jocasta’s prayer (911-923), I briefly reviewed arguments of R. C. Jebb, B. M. W. Knox, R. P. Winnington-Ingram and C. Carey. Second, to her second attempt to persuade Oedipus not to believe in oracles (848-858), which is supposed to clearly represent her function in the tragedy, I compared Ant. 1301-1313 and S. El. 525-551 as competent parallels and revealed novel aspects of her character. And, finally, turning back to 911-923, I reinterpreted her prayer and following scenes referring to those novel aspects.
In the comparing analysis of her second persuasion, I found that the women in Sophocles’ tragedies who were compelled to make her children die for some cause are described as characters that hate the cause consistently. Therefore, in 911-923 and following scenes, also Jocasta, who has a firm belief that she was compelled to do so, is supposed to hate the cause consistently. And the cause cannot be Apollo, who is an object of her prayer, but must be oracles that were told by prophets or prophets themselves who told oracles.
However, it is undeniable that after her second persuasion she often seems to allude to Apollo himself. I would then account for this as follows: being excited and agitated, she confused oracles with the god in words and unconsciously resulted in scorning Apollo himself, and her unconscious scorn exemplifies ironically to audiences or readers that she is in fact impious.
