内容記述 | In general, many Aesopic fables have epimythium, a short interpretation attached to the fable. Codex Athous (= A), which is thought to originate from the fable-books of Babrius, includes two types of epimythium. Judging from the A’s manner of providing epimythia, A probably intended to attach epimythium to every fable. But this attitude of A seems to be different from that of Babrius. This article mainly examines the background of the A’s intention of providing epimythia, by focusing on the reception and transformation of the fables of Babrius from the 3rd to 10th century. And, in this survey of the fables of Babrius, the concept of Aesop’s fables behind each usage is the point, because it determines the usage of the fables. Then, as to the concept of Aesop’s fables, the argument about μῦθος in Progymnasmata is instructive, whose influence is seen in Suda late 10th century. Considering its situation and context, it is probable that, around the 10th century, the fables of Babrius had been simply read as variants of Aesopic fables regardless of Babrius’ original intention, and the A’s style could be produced under such circumstances. A itself can be evaluated as an Aesopic fable-book of its era created by using the fables of Babrius, although modern editors usually use it as a main source of their fable-book of Babrius. | |||||
