内容記述 | Catullus slanders ‘Mentula’ in his 4 epigrams (94, 105, 114, 115). Although Mentula is a basic Latin word which means the male sexual organs, most scholars have identified Mentula as Mamurra, who is one of the henchmen of Caesar. Catullus also attacks Mamurra with using the real name in his two poems (29, 57) and ridicules a woman who seems to be Mamurra’s girlfriend in two others (41, 43). Consequently, we can regard these eight poems as the ‘Mentula’ poems. In this essay, I translate all the ‘Mentula’ poems into Japanese and annotate them briefly. Then I reconfirm the identity of Mentula and ‘a bankrupt of Formiae’ (in 41, 43) with Mamurra. After that, I discuss one of the important problems of ‘Mentula’ poems: i.e. Catullus’ double-standard. Catullus blames Mentula/Mamurra for his adultery but he himself is also an adulterer in the affair with Lesbia. Besides, Catullus criticizes Mentula for his Priapic character but he conducts himself like Priapus, too. In spite of the similarities between Mentula and Catullus, I point out the difference which Catullus wants his readers to recognize: on one hand Catullus enjoys a sort of urban, Hellenistic and Callimachean refinement, on the other hand Mentula and his literary attempt, estate and girlfriend absolutely lack it. | |||||
