内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 In 1505, Aldus Manutius published a collection of Aesop’s fables, which contained Greek text and face-to-face Latin translation. At the beginning of the book, he wrote “quae ante tralata habebantur, infida admodum erant (what were previously translated were quite unreliable).” In this article, we focus on the reliability of translation claimed by Aldus, and examine four Greek-to-Latin translated collections of Aesop’s fables, including the Aldus version, up to the early 16th century.
The three translations other than the Aldus version which we examine are those of Laurentius Valla (1438), Rinuccius Aretinus (late 1440’s), and Bonus Accursius (late 1470’s). They had been published since 1470’s, and especially former two were printed many times and seem to have been very popular.
As a result of comparative examination, we notice a probable influence of Accursius on Aldus. And, in the reliability of translation Aldus required, following points are found out to be important: 1) the high correspondency of Latin to Greek words and 2) the appropriate Latin usage based on the classical Latin. It can be said that Aldus was involved in the trend of recurrence of the classical Latin, which was growing at that time. On the other hand, we need also pay attention to the fact that “unreliable” translations were still rather mainstream in Aldus’ time.
