内容記述 | This paper examines the 1890s’ editorial policy of the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, one of the most prestigious literary monthlies in nineteenth-century America, focusing mainly on its editorials and articles written by the editor-in-chief, Richard Watson Gilder (1843–1909). In doing so, it discusses how Gilder attempted to contextualize his magazine in the “magazine revolution,” a period through which magazines converted into mass media. Faced with a decline in circulation during the 1890s, editors of the Century had to redefine their magazine to compete with newly-emerged inexpensive periodicals with a larger circulation. Previous studies have paid little attention to the Century from the 1890s onward, regarded as decades after its heyday. Most critics attribute the magazine’s decline in readership to its refusal to adapt to the changing times. Historical documents and articles written by Gilder during the 1890s, however, reveal his seemingly stubborn but actually ambiguous attitude toward the changing time and situation. Furthermore, these writings also show that Gilder tried to redefine what ideal magazines and magazine editors would be in the industrial, social, and cultural transformations in American magazine publishing at the turn of the century. In Century’s case, the magazine revolution provided editors like Gilder an opportunity to rethink and redefine their role as cultural custodians in print culture at the turning point of American culture and society. |
