内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The Tales of the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety should be described as a digest edition of narratives of 24 examples that depict the deeds of filial progeny who practiced “filial piety,” a familial ethic of ancient China. While there are many uncertainties regarding the establishment of the compilation, by the 14th century, at the latest, various books of The Tales of the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety were created and reached Japan in succession.
This study focusses on The Comprehensive Compilation of Poems on the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety, which, among the various books of The Tales of the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety brought into Japan, played an especially important role in the acceptance of The Tales of the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety in the early stages, and consists of an examination of the background to the establishment of, editorial intention of and character of the compilation in the form of poems, illustrations and stories. Specifically, by investigating the gogonzekku poems (Poems of four lines, each of five characters) and stories of the sole extant published copy of The Comprehensive Compilation of Poems on the Twentyfour Paragons of Filial Piety, in the collection of the National Library of China, and the various duplicate manuscripts that have been passed down in Japan, the books published in the Hongwu period and in the 25th year of the Jiajing period have been reconstructed. As a result, while the literary poetic style inherited from Guo Jujing in the Song era has been revealed, the history of that aspect becoming less comprehensible in later eras and the alterations making the content more easily understandable have been clarified. It is also pointed out that the creation of the Otogi Zoshi (books of colloquial style Japanese texts with illustrations; Saga-bon book), which formed the foundation of the acceptance of The Tales of the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety in the Edo period, was an influence stemming from the Jiajing edition book.
At the same time, regarding the historical background to the establishment of the illustrations, the illustrations in the book contained in the collection of the National Library of China have been compared with “Illustrations of The Tales of the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety” excavated from tombs, and it is pointed out that designs in common especially with those excavated from the Jin graves in Northern China have been discovered. It is assumed that the reason for this is that the books of The Tales of the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety of the lineage of the “Filial piety legends” that contain illustrations, stories and poems have the background of being transmitted from the northern area to the southern area of China.
