内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The purpose of this paper is to analyze the speech made by Kinza Hirai (1859-1916), a Japanese Buddhist priest, in the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in September 1893 and examine his opinions on the relationship between the revision of Japan’s treaties and religions. Thus far, modern scholarship has generally agreed that Hirai tried to proclaim the moral and intellectual superiority of Japanese religions and call for revising Japan’s ‘‘unfair’’ treaties with Western nations, which justified many judicial or commercial preferential treatments enjoyed by foreign residents in Japan. This paper reconsiders those assessments, arguing that addressing Japan's inferior positions in contemporary international politics, he condemned such exploitation of ‘‘the weak’’ by western powers by appealing to Christian morality. In his speech, he distinguished ‘‘false Christianity’’ which was tied with political invasions by western powers, from ‘‘real Christianity,’’ which helped the oppressed according to the teachings of the Bible, thus regarding the revision of Japan’s unequal treaty as a religious duty of the United States as a nation of ‘‘real Christianity’’ in order to eradicate ‘‘false’’ one. Besides, Hirai believed that one of the purposes of revising such unequal treaties was to abolish discrimination against Japanese immigrants abroad based on the difference of race or religion rather than restore equal rights at home. Hirai criticized the superficiality of the Parliament’s idea of ‘‘human brotherhood’’ by referring to the exclusion of Japanese immigrants, for they were ‘‘pagans,’’ which he had come across on the Pacific Coast.
