内容記述 | The term brahmacārin- is first attested in the R° gveda, the oldest Sanskrit text in India. It literally means “[one who is] engaged in the bráhman,” the word bráhman standing for, at least in the early Vedic period, the magical power of the sacred speech. In the Vedic literature, the brahmacārin is used principally in two meanings: (1) “the Vedic student who learns the Veda from his teacher, leading an ascetic life”; and(2) “[one whoever is] keeping chastity.” / The term brahmacārin- is also attested in the early Pāli Buddhist canon. It represents either “[one who is] leading an ascetic life, especially by keeping chastity,” or, more specifically, “[one who is] keeping chastity.” While these meanings have correspondences in the Veda, no instance of “the Vedic student” is found in the Pāli canon. / The term brahmacariya( brahmacarya in Sanskrit) is frequently attested in the Pāli Buddhist texts. Both in the Vedic and the Buddhist traditions, it is employed to mean “asceticism,” and, in a narrower sense, “chastity.” The broadness of its meaning would have made it possible to be used in the traditions. On the other hand, the term brahmacārin as “the Vedic student” is so closely connected to the Vedic culture that it would have been less used in the traditions outside the Veda in this particular meaning. | |||||||||
