内容記述 | The shushuxue(術数学)is a mysterious academic practice that integrates science and divination, and Chinese music is undoubtedly one of the shushuxue. In particular, in various music theory books, the number of which has been increasing since the Ming dynasty, music is often associated with yi(易), and it is deeply related to the calendar. Moreover, these books explain the mysterious relationship between heaven and humans. However, in China, music has been treated as the study of Confucian classics(Jingxue, 経学), and music was often not classified as part of the group of the shushuxue in traditional Chinese library catalogs. That is, although Chinese music contained an element of shushuxue, it was distinguished from general shushuxue. In this paper, I consider how mysterious numbers, as well as divination and science, were linked in the theory of musical pitch through an analysis of diagrams related to yi in the music theory book of Jiang Yong(江永, 1681-1763). In his study of temperament, Jiang Yong supports Zhu Zaiyu (朱載堉)’ s 12 equal temperament and links it to the study of Hetu and Luoshu(河図洛書). In his later years, he explained Zhu Zaiyu’s theory; however, even when he supported the sanfensunyifa(三分損益法), which was a traditional method of calculating musical pitch, he tried to link the theory of temperament with the study of Hetu Luoshu. Among the various calculation methods used in the study of temperament, there are theories that are intimately linked to the number of Hetu. There are also theories that were deeply connected to the number of Luoshu. Some of these theories were closely related to the sanfensunyifa. However, they were only superficially consistent with 12 equal temperament and do not relate to the essential part of its scale calculation. Moreover, some of these theories were closely related to 12 equal temperament. Nevertheless, they were only superficially consistent with the sanfensunyifa and do not relate to the essential part of its scale calculation, i.e., it was possible to reassociate the mathematics associated with the sanfensunyifa with 12 equal temperament. In the case of Jiang Yong, instead of observing Hetu and Luoshu and inventing a new theory, he believed in the veracity of a particular theory, and Hetu and Luoshu proved its veracity. In other words, he used Hetu and Luoshu to prove the theory that he supported. This was different from providing scientific proof. However, for Jiang Yong, it was an act of trying to prove the veracity of his theory. Because music was one of the topics of the study of Confucian classics, if one wanted to insist on the veracity of a particular temperament theory, one needed to locate its basis in the Confucian classics. Hetu and Luoshu were not included in the Four Books and Five Classics of Confucianism; however, there were no scriptures of music. Therefore, it was up to each philosopher to decide what to consider a scripture of music. For Jiang Yong, the books of shushuxue, such as Hetu and Luoshu, were similar to scriptures of music, and therefore, they could serve as the basis of his theory.
