内容記述 Izu-Hanto-Toho-Oki Earthquake (M = 6.7) took place on June 29, 1980. It was the largest shock among the earthquake swarm that continuously occured east off the Izu Peninsula from late June to early July. The earthquake caused severe damage to some buildings in and around Ito city. This is a report on the visual survey of some of the damaged buildings in the area. The Futo elementary school building and its gymnasium were the most heavily damaged by the earthquake. They stand across the excavation and the fill, halfway up a slanting surface. The schoolhouse is a 3-story reinforced concrete building. In the longitudinal direction, it has rather slender frames and non-structural walls, while in the transverse direction, it has considerable numbers of walls. The longitudinal nonstructural walls were fractured by shear force and the junctions to the stair halls were severely damaged. This might be attributed to the incompatibility of both deformation capability and vibration characteristics of the frames, walls and stair halls. All the braces of the steel framed gymnasium have been broken in the connectors and a fairly large portion of mortar facing (4 m × 6 m) on the wall exfoliated and fell. It is presumed that the braces bore the greater part of the lateral force during the ground motion because the building does not have enough walls in the same direction. If the connectors had been strong enough to bind the braces, the gymnasium might remained safe and sound. Damage to expansion joints in reinforced concrete buildings and slippage of roofing tiles in wooden houses were the wide spread damage in the afflicted district.
