内容記述 The authors studied rocking motions of a rectangular column, due to S.H.M. of the ground which may be regarded as violent shocks of earthquake, after the method that had been carried out by Messrs. Kimura and Iida. I. It is difficult to find a general solution of the equation of rocking motion (1), so we transformed it in the expression (2) and solved by mechanical integration. II. We assumed that the body is 90cm high and 30cm wide, and took 0.5, 0.2, 1.0 sec as the periods of the ground motions, and as the amplitudes. ε_1=8.0, 4.0cm, horizontally ε_2=3.2, -3.2, 1.6, -1.6cm vertically. These periods appear most frequently on seismograms, and the maximum acceleration calculated from the above periods and amplitudes may not be far different from that of the earthquake. The results are described as follows : 1. When the period of the motion is large, the magnitude of amplitude determines the direction of the overturning,(Fig.2), but when the period is short, the direction of overturning is determined by the direction of the first ground motion, independent of the amplitude,(Fig.3). 2. In the case of |ε_1|<|ε_2|, the direction, of the overturning will be always the same, independent of amplitude and period,(Fig.4). 3. From the expression of time-lag, (3), we deduce that the body is neither overturned nor rocked, when g tan α/p^2(ε_2 tan α+ε_1)>1. Fig.5 shows the relation between amplitude, and period in this case. III. In the case of Ogasima Earthquake, May 1, 1939, at Nagane, Hutto Village, the direction of the overturning of grave-st nes were completely depend upon the value of b/h, where h is the height of a grave-stone and b is the width of it. Moreover, the direction of overturning pointed nearly to the epicentre,(Fig.6). From this fact, it can be assumed that these overturning were occurred by vibrations, due to Rayleigh-waves, with long period and large amdlitude. Therefore taking 2, 12, 48cm as the amplitudes and 0.5, 2π/5, 4π/5 sec as the period, we studied the aspects of the overturning and we got results shown in Fig.7. In these cases, it is shown that the grave-stones were not overturned by the first declination.'But if we took into consideration, side-slip of the grave-stone when it declines, the overturning in the direction of the large angular deflection will be explained. In accordance with the physical meaning of the expression (3), it is necessary that εp^2>249 gal at b/h=0.43,εp^2>154 gal at 0.19, and if ε_2<0, εp^2>735gal at 0.43, εp^2>226 gal at 0.19.
