内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The paper deals with the works of three prominent authors from different countries in Europe: the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926), the Yugoslav writer Danilo Kiš (1935-1989), and the Swedish psychiatrist Axel Munthe (1857-1949), focusing on the relationship with their beloved dogs. Munthe, the refounder of the church of San Michele on Capri Island, wrote a kind of autobiography in English named The Story of San Michele, where the readers always feel the breath of the dog who guides the protagonist's life. The same thing happens in the autobiographical work of Kiš, Early Sorrows, whose protagonist decides to be a poet so that he would write about his dog. Finally, in the case of Rilke, dogs play a role exactly like a compass in his life. In the works of these three authors, it might be said that the boundaries between the protagonist and dogs are ambiguous. The different tones seen in their works reflect the historical phases of Europe. Munthe was born in the midst of the nineteenth century, an era of scientific progress. Rilke sought the meaning of existence while living through the fall of Austro-Hungarian Empire and the First World War. As a Jewish child during the Second World War, Kiš lost a quite few members of his relatives, including his father, in Nazi concentration camps. These different times mean that the dogs are portrayed differently; yet it is clear that they vividly reflect the minds of their owners in all times and places, like a mirror of our inner depths.
