内容記述 | Sakai (2012) argues that tautology is an act of “naming twice” by means of the same word, an act based on the freedom to name the designated entity by invoking a perceived similarity. On this view, the meaning of a linguistic sign is renewed every time the sign is used, rather than being something invariable that is rigidly associated with it. Positing that what makes this constant renewal possible is the utterer’s intense interest in the entity referred to, this paper shows that tautology serves to express the freedom to identify something unique about the entity, something that inspires the intense interest. This uniqueness is precisely what triggers the perception of similarity as the driving force behind “naming twice.” We are cognizant, at least to some extent, of the uniqueness that others sense in objects and categories, thereby establishing and maintaining a speech community where members allow one another the freedom to “name twice.”
